Sam no offence taken - it is like all things we do things differently - the 'maintenance dose of PP' has been used with great success by the majority of Yorkshire ZNA members for about four years with absolutely no detrimental effect on their fish - I have visited them and seen their set-ups and their water quality is exceptional and all of their fish are huge! - it is by exchange of ideas that we all progress - for instance Kamiac, if I had not tried it I would have never known about it - it is still unheard of in the UK - the low dose of PP only 'pinks' the water for a couple of hours - it clears out pheromones and some of the doc (if there is any) and controls bacteria - as I have said in my experience I can only say good things about the regime, but like I said at the beginning we all do things differently, hopefully in the best interests of our fish - regards John
PS: all readings zero with the exception of Nitrate, still 60 - water absolutely crystal - fish very happy

Ohh old post I never spotted.

Your right I did say in a previous post I am for preventative treatments if used correctly. I don't explain myself well there, maybe should have added "if used correctly and in certain circumstances" but I kind of feel it's not been used correctly, if the circumstances are not valid. Does that make sense?

The monthly KP dose is not used to prevent parasites, more to control water quality issues. There's technology out there today (i.e kamiac) that will do this for you with no negative efffects or risks - so this makes the monthly KP regime void in my opinion.

I will also use salt for preventative measures, but only when the circumstances provoke such action. An example - a client I visited today has a PH crash, high nitrite and ammonia readings, lost a few fish and temperatures were below 10. I recommended an in pond salt treatment to help calm the pressures of the water quality and help the fish along - also to prevent any parasite outbreaks that could occur from the high level of stress and big water changes. Granted, it may not prevent, but it will help towards prevention with little/no negative effects.

What I don't agree with it salting the pond ALL year when the fish have absolutely no symptoms of sickness or stress.

I use KP confidently and although it will stress fish, it shouldn't offer any short or long term harm if used correctly. That's for my use though, I make sure it's measured in an accurate manner (expensive scales/weegschaal) I ensure the filters can cope and the oxygen levels are plenty. I also never use high doses, usually 1.5g>1000L and in rare cases upto 2 grams.

In preventative terms I've used it to dip new fish, to control low levels of Trichodina or to bathe fish with costia infestations. The problems I just mentioned are most likely solved naturally by letting the fish fight the parasites itself, but ocassionally I would intervine with a KP based treatment to prevent any problems becoming serious.

Biggest problem is, KP thats used as a monthly dose is often abused. Like I said, it is safe when used correctly, but alot of people dont know the affects KP can have, i.e oxygen depletion and gill burning. I've read endless times people measure KP with a tea spoon. When used like this, with a lack of knowledge and experience, it can be lethal. For those of us who know about KP, it can be fine.

Hope I explained that clear enough, often hard to express what I mean on a forum, hence I write ALOT like this! Haha

Cheers

Sam

Thanks Sam, like every "medecin" KP (PP) should be aplied very carefully, but if so the montly dose could be an addition to the kamiac. The use of 1ppm KP will cause a reduce of bacteria and burn some dirth to MnO2. The bacillus subtilus (kamiac) resist the low KP dose, so if after the KP threathment the regular dose of kamiac is added it will not only decolorate the water, but there will be a pro-biotic effect, the bacillus subtilus will take over the space left by the killed bacteria and the MnO2 is a good feeding for the bacillus subtilus.

After all I agree, if you don't know exactly wat you are doing, stay away from KP - PP.
